Swine Flu Panic

April 27, 2009

Well swine flu panic has officially hit the industry. The stock market is currently see-sawing and industry stocks are down.

Company Current Value Change %
Carnival (CCL) 25.02 Down 3.04 11.98%
Royal Caribbean (RCL) 12.31 Down 2.15 14.83%

As of 1:27pm ET

UPDATE 5:09pm

This is how the stocks ended up today.

Company Current Value Change %
Carnival (CCL) 24.59 Down 3.84 13.51%
Royal Caribbean (RCL) 12.10 Down 2.36 16.32%

As of closing time

One word: Yikes!

Just like all my coverage of the Norwegian Epic, I will also follow the construction and deployment of the Oasis of the Seas. Interesting to note from the below picture from 4/15/2009, only one set of pipes are in place in the funnel.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but her first sea trials are still set for May 15th. Seeing her take to the open ocean (although it’ll only be the Baltic Sea) for the first time must be astonishing.

UPDATE 1:38pm: Apparently the reason its missing one of the funnel pieces is because it’s retracted. This, i assume to be, is so that it passes under the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark. The maximum clearance of the Bridge is 65 meters, and Freedom of the Seas height was 63.7 meters.

RCI announced today that the Independence of the Seas will be based year-round in Europe. She will sail from Southampton starting in April 2010. It has already been announced that she will sail to Europe for the Summer 2010, RCI is just unveiling the winter 2010 season essentially.

News from PR Newswire may suggest that. Ambassadors International, Inc., the parent company of Windstar Cruises, may be on the brink actually. Today

Ambassadors sold its Travel and Events division to Lakeview Equity Partners, LLC, a Milwaukee Equity Fund. It appears to me that they are trying to liquidate some slack in the company, and focus on their core operations.
